The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has extended its initial Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) by twenty-six (26) hours. The Alert was scheduled to expire at 4pm this afternoon (Sunday 12th December 2021) but will now remain in effect until 6pm on Monday (13th December 2021). The Alert now applies to Tobago as well.
According to the Met Office, although a few settled periods can be experienced this evening, there is still the high (70%) chance of heavy downpours and Thunderstorms. Elevated river levels and saturated soils will increase the likelihood of localized ponding and street flooding. Smaller watercourses can become overwhelmed in heavy downpours. Flooding was reported on Sunday in the following areas of Sangre Grande:
The Met Office notes that gusts in excess of 55 Km/h can be expected near heavy downpours and can displace loose outdoor objects and unsecured roofs. Landslides/landslips are also likely in areas so prone.
Citizens are advised to secure loose items outdoors. Do not wade or drive through flood waters. Monitor weather conditions and updates from official sources.
