Chaguanas Mayor, Faaiq Mohammed, said on Tuesday (11th May 2021) that he has received numerous complaints about the lack of available space at the Chaguanas Health Centre, located at Galt Street in Montrose. We are getting a lot of complaints that there is a lack of space at the facility. It shows clearly that Chaguanas needs a proper health facility. Speaking with Guardian Media on Tuesday, the Mayor said the Health Centre has outgrown its capacity and he is suggesting that it be moved to a more spacious location, such as the currently underutilized COSTAATT building at Connector Road. That building has ample parking and can be outfitted with medical equipment to be used as the health facility. Mayor Mohammed noted the facilities are so cramped that medical workers have to use tents that are placed partially on the roadway. A proposal has already been made for authorities to cordon off Galt Street and place more tents on the roadway and to also use tents on a nearby empty lot, in order to meet the growing demand for healthcare in Chaguanas. The Health Centre at Galt Street is one of the Designated COVID-19 Vaccination Sites in the country. The Mayor said the request to relocate the health facility would have to go through the proper channels. According to Mayor Mohammed, Government can save millions of dollars by renovating existing facilities since these properties are owned by the State, as opposed to paying rent for the building that now houses the Health Centre.
