Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, wants the Government to take immediate steps to prevent a possible food crisis in Trinidad and Tobago. She is calling for the removal of VAT on more food items. In a Facebook post on Saturday (16th January 2021), Persad-Bissessar notes that, “Increasing prices of food have always been a major problem under this PNM Government but with one major food distributor warning that if the Forex woes continue, there will be an expected 35% price hike for all foods soon.” She says this is a disaster waiting to happen and the longer the Government sits on their hands and ignore this looming crisis, “the deeper the hole becomes.” The Opposition Leader also questioned what became of the TT $500 Million promised by the Government to boost our food security. “The Government also promised a five hundred-million-dollar stimulus investment into Agriculture in the last budget, but we are yet to see anything concrete from that allocation.” See the full statement below by Persad-Bissessar: Government Must Take Immediate Steps to Prevent A Possible Food Crisis: Removal of VAT & More Investment in Local Food Production We are a small operation.
