A motion of ‘No Confidence’ has been filed in the House of Representatives today (Wednesday 13th January 2021) by the Leader of the Opposition, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, against Minister of National Security, Stuart Young. In filing the motion, Persad-Bissessar said, “WHEREAS the Minister of National Security has unequivocally demonstrated his inability to competently execute his duties: BE IT RESOLVED that this House express its lack of confidence in the Minister of National Security." She stated that since his appointment as Minister of National Security, “Minister Young has been responsible for one disaster after another. These include the chaotic and poorly conceived migrant registration policy, the rapid deterioration of security of our national borders, and the secret award of private security contracts.” According to Persad-Bissessar, the necessity of this motion is “underscored by the draconian and authoritarian decision to keep our borders closed to citizens, leaving tens of thousands of nationals stranded abroad and making Trinidad and Tobago the only nation in the entire world where nationals require an exemption directly from a Government Minister to return home.” While the motion is expected to be defeated in Parliament as the People's National Movement (PNM) commands the majority of seats (22 versus the Opposition's 19), it will open the floor for all nineteen (19) Opposition MP's to heavily chastise Minister Young in the House of Representatives and outline his failures. "A full case will be presented in the Parliament outlining every detail and every instance where he has placed the security and reputation of our nation at risk," said the Opposition Leader.
