Following the recent announcement by Finance Minister, Colm Imbert, that all taxes will be removed from laptops and tablets, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is calling on Government to go a step further and completely scrap the online tax. She also wants the “reinstatement of a laptop programme for those who still may not be able to afford it.” In a statement on her Facebook Page yesterday (Sunday 6th September 2020), Persad-Bissessar noted, “We suggested in our National Economic Transformation Plan the complete permanent removal of the online tax and with the new normal with COVID-19, I am sure the Government sees the applicability of this and the annoyance the online tax has been to the public.” The online tax of 7% was levied on online purchases of goods and services since 2016 and at the time of its introduction, the Government said the tax was intended to help manage the increase in foreign exchange outflows from online purchases, reduce revenue leakage and assist local manufacturers and service companies to compete with overseas retailers. The Government had further noted the tax was not a new concept and there were well-established precedent for a tax of this nature in countries such as the U.S, U.K and New Zealand.
