Jamaica has activated its emergency protocols following confirmation today (Wednesday 6th July 2022) that the country has recorded its first case of the Monkeypox virus. Its Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon, stating that the patient is a male who recently travelled from the United Kingdom. The man reportedly presented to the public health system on Tuesday (5th July 2022), but has been on the island since 1st July 2022. Dr. Tufton said the patient has been isolated, with his close contacts also in quarantine. Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, also confirmed the news in a Facebook post on Wednesday. Just over a week ago, a crew member on a flight headed to St. Lucia tested positive for the Monkeypox virus, but Officials said the person never disembarked. There are no confirmed cases of the virus in Trinidad and Tobago at this time. [Source: TTT Live Online]
