A man is dead after he was brutally attacked by a close relative in Freeport early this morning (Sunday 17th September 2023). The deceased has been identified as 58-year-old Deodath Gopie of Grant Trace Extension, off Beaucarro.
According to reports, Gopie was at his home with other relatives around 3:30 AM when he was attacked by a 34-year-old male relative, who was armed with a cutlass. Gopie was struck repeatedly about the body and died at the scene. Further reports indicate the suspect is the son of the victim, who is mentally unstable. The suspect also attacked and killed the family's dog. Continuing on his brutal rampage, he then made his way to the bedroom of a female relative, said to be his mother. However, upon seeing the cutlass and the man’s bloodied clothing, the woman locked the bedroom door behind her and notified the Police. A team of Officers responded to the scene, led by PC Tull and PC Ramdeen. Upon arrival, they found the suspect in a room of the house, bareback and covered in blood. He was detained and taken into custody. A search for the murder weapon was conducted, but it was not found. The District Medical Officer (DMO) and the relevant authorities were summoned to the scene. Investigations are continuing, led by WPC Mohammed of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI) Region III. More on this as it becomes available. [Source: Loop] We are a small operation.
