The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has extended its Riverine Flood Alert by forty-eight (48) hours. It now remains in effect until 6pm on Saturday (21st August 2021). The Alert was upgraded from Yellow Level to Orange Level on Wednesday (18th August 2021). The Alert applies to areas along waterways and low lying areas in Trinidad.
Riverine flooding is ongoing at this time across the Caroni and South Oropuche river basins, including areas such as St. Helena, Penal and Debe.
According to the Met Office, river levels continue to be critical, particularly along the Caroni River with lower banks already at spilling level. Additionally, there have been multiple reports of smaller water courses being filled, with flooding in low lying areas. Other major rivers are contained at this time and are being closely monitored.
Citizens are advised to monitor weather conditions and river levels before venturing out. Avoid areas with flood waters. Monitor updates from official sources and plan safety measures, including emergency supplies of food and water. Follow the instructions of Government Officials.
