UPDATE 3: The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries issued the following Media Release at 10am this morning: UPDATE ON EXPLOSION AT NIQUAN ENERGY POINTE-A-PIERRE UPDATE 2: The Ministry of National Security has advised that the fire at the NiQuan Plant has been contained. UPDATE: The explosion took place at NiQuan Energy’s Gas-to-Liquids Plant located on what was formerly the Petrotrin Pointe-a-Pierre Refinery. According to an employee, the explosion may have been caused by a “build up of wax” inside the pipelines leading to the hydrocracking unit in the Plant. Trinidad Express reported the employee said, “Fire services and Police Officers are here. The area has been cordoned off and no one is being allowed inside.” No one was injured in the explosion, according to the employee. “The Plant has to come down before the wax can move in that pipeline or that will be the end of everything in NiQuan. We trying to save the reformer. So far nobody was around. The night shift was already leaving the plant so no injury casualty thus far,” he said. The NiQuan Plant was opened in March by Prime Minister Keith Rowley. Police and Fire Officers are currently on the scene of an explosion at the Petrotrin site in Point-a-Pierre. Residents in Marabella reported hearing and feeling a loud explosion around 6:30am this morning (Wednesday 7th April 2021). The explosion was so loud it caused many homes in the area to violently shake. Several ambulances were also seen rushing to the scene. There are no confirmed reports of fatalities or injuries at this time. Persons in San Fernando, La Romaine, Phillipine, Claxton Bay and La Brea reportedly felt the blast. Energy Minister, Franklin Khan, said investigations are underway. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates. [Source: Trinidad Express]
