UPDATE 2: Police now say the death toll from the attacks on churches and hotels has risen to 321 with about 500 wounded. The Islamic State (IS) group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Police have so far detained 40 suspects while investigations continue.
UPDATE: Sri Lanka’s Defence Minister, Ruwan Wijewardene, has said "preliminary investigations" indicated that the bombings were in retaliation for deadly attacks on Mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March.
A series of eight (8) explosions rocked Sri Lanka at various churches and hotels on Easter Sunday, killing at least 207 people and injuring 450. Among the dead are reportedly 27 foreign nationals.
A national curfew has been implemented in Sri Lanka while all Social Media networks have been temporarily blocked to prevent the spread of misinformation and propaganda. Three (3) churches in Negombo, Batticaloa and Colombo's Kochchikade district were bombed during Easter services. The Shangri-La, Kingsbury and Cinnamon Grand hotels were also targeted in the Capital.
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has issued a statement calling for people to remain calm and support the authorities in their investigations.
Seven (7) people have been reportedly arrested for the attacks but so far no terrorist organization have claimed responsibility.
U.S President, Donald Trump, tweeted out his condolences at the time of the attacks:
138 people have been killed in Sri Lanka, with more than 600 badly injured, in a terrorist attack on churches and hotels. The United States offers heartfelt condolences to the great people of Sri Lanka. We stand ready to help!
These attacks in Sri Lanka are the deadliest since the end of the country's Civil War in 2009.
