Netflix is gearing up for another price hike for its streaming service. The updated pricing is already in effect for new customers while existing users in the United States will see the increase over the coming weeks. Netflix’s basic plan (single screen) will continue to cost U.S $8.99 per month, while its most popular standard plan (2 screens) will see a jump by 7.7% from U.S $12.99 to U.S $13.99 per month. The top-tier premium plan will get the biggest increase, by 12.5%, from U.S $15.99 to U.S $17.99 per month. What does this mean for Netflix customers in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean? Well, for now the price hike only seems to apply to U.S customers but this could foreshadow what’s to come in the near future. The last time Netflix raised its prices was back in January 2019. The company is facing increased competition in the streaming market with recent services like Apple TV+, Disney+, Peacock and HBO Max. Netflix’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer, Greg Peters, recently hinted that a price jump was coming at an earnings call. He said that as the company invests more into both content and tech developments, they’ll “occasionally go back and ask [customers] to pay a little bit more to keep that virtuous cycle of investment and value creation going.” In the past, Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings has said the company is okay with losing some customers due to things like price hikes and competitors. Apple has officially announced the date for its highly-anticipated iPhone 12 event - Tuesday 13th October 2020 at 1pm EST/10am PST. The event this year will be streamed directly from Apple Park and will be completely virtual, just like WWDC 2020 in June and the ‘Time Flies’ event in September, because of COVID-19. Apple is teasing this month’s event with a “Hi, Speed” tagline. Will this year’s iPhone lineup actually be called ‘iPhone 12?’ That’s what all the rumors suggest, but we’ll only know for sure when the event begins. Just last month, on 15th September 2020, Apple held a virtual event to announce the Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 6, iPad Air 4th generation and the 8th generation iPad. Apple also revealed some new subscription services like Fitness+ and the Apple One bundle. According to 9to5Mac, the “Hi, Speed” tagline is a clear hint at the iPhone 12 and its expected 5G connectivity and A14 processor. The circular rings also resemble the Siri interface amid rumors of a smaller HomePod. The blue color shade of the invite could also be a hint at the ‘Midnight Blue’ color option that is reportedly coming with the iPhone 12 lineup — it also just so happens to match the new blue Apple Watch Series 6. Whether or not the orange on the invite also represents a new iPhone 12 color is unknown. Apple’s October event will be live-streamed across Apple’s website, in the Apple TV app and on YouTube. The primary focus for the iPhone 12 event will, of course, be the iPhone 12. Apple is expected to unveil four (4) new iPhone 12 models this year:
The differentiating factor between these iPhone 12 models will be the camera technology. The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 are expected to feature dual-lens camera set-ups on the back, while the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature triple-lens camera arrays on the back with an all-new LiDAR Scanner as well. Other features of the iPhone 12 lineup include OLED displays across the board as well as 5G connectivity. The iPhone 12 lineup will reportedly support mmWave 5G as well as sub-6GHz 5G. In terms of design, the devices are expected to feature flat edges similar to the iPhone 4, iPhone 5, and the latest iPad Pro. Reports currently indicate that Apple is planning a staggered release schedule for the iPhone 12, with some models potentially not being available until November. It’s possible other products may also be revealed at the iPhone 12 event, including Apple’s AirPods Studio (over-ear headphones), AirTag (item trackers), a new Apple TV and Siri Remote, and news about the Apple Silicon transition for the Mac. Apple became the first U.S company with a $2 Trillion Market Capitalization on Wednesday (19th August 2020) as its share price climbed above U.S $467.77. The tech giant joins Saudi Aramco as the only companies to reach a $2 Trillion market value.
Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil company, Saudi Aramco, briefly crossed the $2 Trillion level a few days days after its Initial Public Offering (IPO) in December 2019. Currently, that company is worth U.S $1.82 Trillion. Apple's Market Capitalization has soared by 59%, or U.S $695 Billion this year. Shares have gained 22% since 30th July 2020, when the company reported blockbuster second-quarter earnings and announced a 4-for-1 stock split. Apple reached the $2 Trillion milestone just over two (2) years after becoming the first U.S company to achieve a $1 Trillion Market Capitalization on 2nd August 2018. Since then, Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft have all joined the ultra-exclusive $1 Trillion club. Both Amazon and Microsoft currently have Market Capitalizations of about $1.6 Trillion while Alphabet is near $1.05 Trillion. The first company in the world to reach a $1 Trillion valuation is state-owned Chinese oil giant PetroChina, which briefly eclipsed the level back in 2017. Apple is expected to release its eagerly-awaited iPhone 12 models in early October 2020, several weeks later than its usual September release, due to COVID-19 related manufacturing delays. The Apple Watch Series 6 and other products may still be released in September 2020. The Ministry of Health has announced on Monday evening (30th March 2020) that Trinidad and Tobago now has a total of 83 positive cases of COVID-19, adding another case since this morning’s update. So far there have been three (3) deaths and one (1) person has been discharged. Tobago reported its third confirmed case earlier today. According to the Ministry, the new additional case comes from a person with a history of recent travel. The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) has tested a total of 539 samples to date. The Ministry notes that of the 83 positive cases, 49 of these came from the group of T&T Nationals who recently returned from a cruise. T&T is currently locked down for all non-essential businesses until 15th April 2020 in an attempt to slow the rapidly growing number of COVID-19 cases in the country. After many months of beta testing on both iOS and Android, Facebook is finally enabling Dark Mode for WhatsApp for all users today (Tuesday 3rd March 2020). Dark Mode will be mostly pure black on iOS devices and a darker gray on Android. So, how do you enable it? Besides ensuring that you’re running the latest app version of WhatsApp on iOS or Android, there’s not much for you to do actually. If you already have Dark Mode enabled at the system level on iOS 13 or Android 10, then WhatsApp will automatically switch over to the new Dark Mode. iOS 13 is a requirement to enable Dark Mode there. If you’re running Android 9, you can simply enable a new dark theme in the WhatsApp Settings Menu. Facebook didn’t just slap a dark theme onto WhatsApp, however. They took their time to ensure Dark Mode actually lowers the brightness of a phone’s display. According to a WhatsApp Spokesperson: During testing we found that combining pure black and white creates high contrast that can lead to eye fatigue. So instead, you’ll notice a special dark gray background and off-white color that lowers the brightness of the screen, cuts down the glare, and improves contrast and readability. Facebook first announced they would be redesigning their Messenger app to be simpler and easier to use back in August 2019 and it appears the company is starting to roll out that new design this week.
Facebook previously made its Messenger app a one-stop-shop for connecting people and businesses, adding bloat like games, shopping, and confusing chatbots to serve as automated middlemen between users and businesses. Now the company will be hiding most of that unwanted bloat and focusing on just two (2) tabs at the bottom of the app: Chats and People. The latter will be a page dedicated to Stories, which is where you share photos and videos that stay up for only 24 hours. Facebook more or less ripped off its popular Stories feature from Snapchat. A sub-tab adjacent to Stories shows which friends are currently online. Instagram, another Facebook app, averages a whopping 500 Million daily users of its Stories feature as of January 2020. So it’s not difficult to see why Facebook is also pushing the Stories feature hard on its Messenger app. Since Stories also display ads, more eyes on users’ Stories means more revenue for Facebook. Any content previously found in the Discover tab of the Messenger app isn’t gone for good. Now you’ll just have to access it via the search bar, which the majority of users would not do - so businesses will have a hard time committing more resources in this area. Facebook, however, says it remains committed to promoting businesses on its platforms and that they still play an important part of Messenger. See screenshots below from the redesigned Messenger app and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 will come in three (3) models/sizes (S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra), with all of them featuring 120Hz displays and 5G connectivity. According to BGR, the cameras on the Galaxy S20 will be getting several upgraded features: It’ll feature a Galaxy Note 10-like design, and even more powerful specs than its predecessors. The camera experience is also going to get several upgraded features, with the S20 Ultra expected to deliver the best camera ever seen on a Galaxy S phone so far. Facebook-owned WhatsApp previously withdrew support for numerous devices in 2016, and then from all Windows phones on 31st December 2019. Millions of Android and iPhone devices which only support outdated operating systems will no longer be able to run the app from 1st February 2020. WhatsApp announced this move was coming since 2017.
WhatsApp said the move was necessary in order to protect the security of its users. Smartphones running Android 2.3.7 and older, and iOS 8 or older, are those affected by the update. The operating systems that WhatsApp is dropping support for are legacy operating systems, which are no longer updated or installed on new devices. For instance, iPhone 4s, which only supports up to iOS 7, will no longer be compatible with the app. Most users will simply be able to update their operating systems in order to continue using the messaging service. According to a Spokesperson for the company: This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.
Analyst Ben Wood from CCS Insight said the following:
WhatsApp clearly had no option but to ensure its service remains secure, however it faces the difficult side-effect that the app is no longer compatible with older smartphones. |
