Prime Minister Keith Rowley revealed at a Press Conference on Friday (2nd February, 2024), that international crime syndicates are showing interest in Trinidad and Tobago, a development he noted as very concerning.
Prime Minister Rowley held the Press Conference at Whitehall in Port-of-Spain following his three-day visit to Washington, DC, where he met with United States representatives and officials, including Vice President Kamala Harris and U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken. According to the Prime Minister, “We also met with officials of the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). We do have some problems in Trinidad and Tobago here which I will not burden you with today...given the nature of our relationship with the United States, the resources of the FBI and the CIA were made available to us to deal with our own internal problems. We are now attracting elements of international organized crime, which is very concerning to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, so we are discussing this with the United States to get as much help as we can in ensuring that our bad situation is not worsened by these developments...certain criminals are liking us and these are not small-timers.” He said there is also pending legislation regarding firearms trafficking between the United States and the Caribbean, which can assist in reducing illegal firearm-related crimes in the region. More on this as it becomes available. [Source: Loop]

The Ministry of Health, via its Chemistry, Food and Drugs Division, is advising of a voluntary recall notice of Lubricant Eye Drops. The recall, issued by Kilitch Healthcare India Limited, is due to potential safety concerns stemming from unsanitary conditions.
In a Media Release today (Thursday 1st February, 2024), the Ministry said there is a risk of potential eye infections or related harm for patients who use these products. These products should be sterile and contaminated medication applied to the eyes may bypass some of the body's natural defenses. According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), these products were distributed to wholesalers, retailers and via the product distributor, Velocity Pharma LLC.
While the recalled products are not registered for sale in Trinidad and Tobago, out of an abundance of caution, the Ministry is advising persons who may be in possession of these recalled products, to discontinue use immediately and to return the product to the place of purchase where possible.
Additional information can be obtained by contacting the Office of the Director of the Chemistry, Food and Drug Division at [email protected] or 217-4664 ext. 13101. The Ministry said it will continue to monitor the situation and advise the population as necessary.
