Following a formal request for recounts in five (5) constituencies, including San Fernando West, by the United National Congress (UNC), the recount in that particular constituency ended on Thursday night (13th August 2020). Faris Al-Rawi from the People’s National Movement (PNM) has announced that he is the elected representative for San Fernando West.
Al-Rawi spoke outside the office of the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) on Cipero Street in San Fernando after the recount had ended. We have just finished the count for San Fernando West and I would like to announce that victory has been confirmed. I stand as the Member of Parliament properly elected for San Fernando West in the 2020 General Election.
Addressing the Media outside of the EBC’s office, Al-Rawi noted the recount exercise was “a proper one” and said the final count was in keeping with the representation of the People Act, which he said he had no complaint about. He said the EBC conducted an excellent exercise.
As for why it took three (3) days for the recount to be completed, Al-Rawi explained that on election night in San Fernando, there were 59 polling divisions which had to be checked by EBC personnel from the divisions, deputies and party representatives. He said in the recount exercise, however, the Returning Officer had to physically check over 15,000 ballots, polling cards and stubs. Two (2) independent candidates sat in on each day of the recount and they stand as independent witnesses to the process. Al-Rawi complimented the two (2) representatives who attended on behalf of the UNC, saying they “were very cordial and engaged in a proper exercise with us.” He further stated he was happy to be the first representative in Trinidad to complete the recount exercise and was very anxious “for T&T’s business to move on as it must.” Recounts are still ongoing in four (4) remaining constituencies - St. Joseph, Tunapuna, La Horquetta/Talparo and Toco/Sangre Grande.
