Carli Bay fishermen, Parasram Boodoo and Navindra Garib, set out to sea on Monday (19th July 2021). Unfortunately, the pair did not return home and their pirogue was found ashore in Granville, Cedros. Only the body of Boodoo has been found at sea so far. Their boat engine was missing, which immediately suggested the pair may have been attacked by pirates, which is a known occurrence in the area. Police later recovered the missing boat engine under a house and arrests were made. The latest incident with Boodram and Garib came on the heels of the 2-year anniversary of another tragic incident involving Carli Bay fishermen. On 22nd July 2019, pirates attacked several Carli Bay and Orange Valley fishing pirogues sometime after Midnight in the Gulf, beating the fishermen and throwing them overboard into the sea. Their engines and vessels were stolen. While some, fortunately, were able to swim back to shore, five (5) fishermen drowned and two (2) others were never found. Police charged a Sea Lots man with their murders. They also charged two (2) women and another man with stealing two (2) of the engines, which they recovered in Sea Lots hours after that attack. At 4:45pm on Wednesday afternoon (21st July 2021, Couva Police, led by Sgt Rawlins, went near the Point Lisas Industrial Development Company, where they met Officers attached to the Coastal and Riverine Unit. The marine Officers reported that they had discovered human remains floating in the Gulf of Paria. After retrieving the body and bringing it to shore, Boodram’s family later confirmed the identification at the Forensic Science Centre in St. James on Thursday. Four (4) crews on pirogues searched the Gulf of Paria for Garib’s body on Thursday, with his family at the Bay anxiously awaiting any news - but up to mid-afternoon there was none. Although authorities had pledged to work closely with the fishing communities of Carli Bay and Orange Valley following the tragic incident in 2019, fishermen said not much has happened since. Fishermen have made several recommendations to authorities since then, including having access to flare guns. They also asked that the Government provide radar equipment to help capture pirates and improve the communication and response by the Coast Guard to distress calls.
