The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) said it has “become aware of and strongly condemns the reckless and unlawful actions of a quarrying contractor responsible for discharging effluent directly into tributaries leading to the Guanapo River.”
In a Media Release on Saturday (28th June, 2025), WASA said, “This blatant violation of environmental regulations has resulted in visible contamination of the watercourse, negatively impacting water production efficiency at the Caroni Water Treatment Plant. The immediate consequence is reduced water availability, as the Authority is now compelled to implement enhanced purification measures to maintain safety standards.” WASA is reaffirming that the water distributed through its network “remains fully compliant with all quality and safety regulations. The Authority has escalated monitoring and treatment protocols to ensure uninterrupted delivery of safe, potable water to all consumers.” The Authority notes that this incident represents not only an environmental offense but also a “direct threat to public water security. WASA is collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to investigate and halt this irresponsible activity.”
The Media Release concluded by saying, “The Authority calls on the public to report any suspicious activities endangering water resources. WASA remains resolute in its mandate to safeguard national water sources and uphold uncompromising standards in water delivery.“
