UPDATE (2:30pm): The Met Office just extended the Adverse Weather Alert again, this time by thirty (30) minutes. It is now scheduled to end at 8:30pm tonight, instead of 8pm. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), the moisture associated with the trailing leg of Potential Tropical Cyclone Two (PTC2), together with the resulting Northward modulation of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is still with us and could produce some thunderstorms with potential impacts for Trinidad and Tobago, and as such an Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) remains in effect.
However, the TTMS has extended the Alert by two (2) hours, which was supposed to end at 6pm tonight (Wednesday 29th June 2022), but will now remain in effect until 8pm. The Met Office notes that isolated thunderstorms have been and continues to be observed across parts of Trinidad and Tobago due to low level convergence associated with the passage of a strong Tropical Wave (PTC2). Heavy showers/thunderstorms are expected to continue intermittently over the period. These thunderstorms can produce intense rainfall of over 25 mm. Street and/or flash flooding are possible in areas so prone, causing minor traffic disruptions. Electrical discharges are also likely. The threat of gusty winds will also be present. These wind gusts may be brief, but are capable of breaking tree branches, displacing unsecured roofs and loose outdoor objects, and can even topple over unhealthy trees. Instructions:

Kiss Baking Company Limited said on Wednesday (29th June 2022) that it is doing everything possible to ensure the temporary disruption of supply of its range of bread is regularized in the shortest possible time. In a Media Release this morning, Kiss said the recent Tropical Storm Warning affected its supply, but it is working around the clock to ensure it returns to a normal supply. Many businesses closed their offices on Tuesday due to the inclement weather that was expected. Kiss said in its Media Release, “The management and employees of Kiss Baking Co. Ltd. wish to assure its customers throughout Trinidad & Tobago that we are doing everything within our control, and are working around the clock to ensure that the temporary disruption of supply of our range of bread, due to the recent Tropical Storm Warning, is regularized in the shortest possible time. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your support and understanding.” Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, announced at this morning’s virtual Press Conference (Wednesday 29th June 2022) that as of Friday 1st July 2022, travelers wishing to enter Trinidad and Tobago will no longer be required to undergo PCR/Antigen testing. “I've been authorised by the acting Prime Minister, the Honourable Colm Imbert, to announce that the requirement that persons entering Trinidad and Tobago, anyone, for a negative PCR and/or antigen test will be no longer required,” Minister Deyalsingh said this morning. In a Media Release today (Wednesday 29th June 2022), the Ministry of Public Utilities said the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) and the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) have mobilized to restore service to areas affected by last evening's heavy rains caused by the passage of Potential Tropical Cyclone Two.
According to T&TEC's final update last evening at 11pm, service had been restored to thirteen (13) of sixteen (16) locations across Trinidad and Tobago and crews had been dispatched to the remaining three (3). Some of the affected areas were: Old Road Blanchisseuse, Madras Road, and Biche in Trinidad, and Woodlands and Bacolet Estate in Tobago. Several of WASA's Water Treatment Plants were forced to stop operations due to clogged intake screens caused by flooded rivers and water sources. This led to a disruption in the water supply to nineteen (19) areas across Trinidad and Tobago, including: Matura, Lopinot, Biche, parts of St. Ann’s and Santa Cruz in Trinidad, and Bacolet, Mason Hall and Roxborough in Tobago. WASA has indicated that the affected Water Treatment Plants are currently being assessed and that operations will resume as soon as conditions allow. Due to the discontinuation of the Tropical Storm Warning for Trinidad and Tobago, students are expected to return to classes as normal today (Wednesday 29th June 2022) in Trinidad. However, schools in Tobago will remain closed as the Division of Education, Research and Technology has already advised that schools and classes are expected to resume on Thursday.
Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Faris Al-Rawi, said late last night, “With the situation of downgrade, we are still in alert mode - but with no Government announcements, schools are still in gear for tomorrow unless advised otherwise.” Schools were closed on Tuesday, except for students writing exams, in anticipation of severe weather across the country. An Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) is in effect for T&T until 6pm on Wednesday. [Source: T&T Guardian] UPDATE (2:30pm): The Met Office has extended the Adverse Weather Alert. It is now scheduled to end at 8:30pm on Wednesday, instead of 8pm. The Tropical Storm Warning has been discontinued for Trinidad and Tobago and the Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued an Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) for a total of almost nineteen (19) hours. The Alert began at 11:05pm on Tuesday night (28th June 2022) and remains in effect until 6pm on Wednesday (29th June 2022).
According to the Met Office, at 11pm on Tuesday night, the centre of Potential Tropical Cyclone Two (PTC2) was located near 10.9ºN latitude 62.8ºW longitude, which is 175 Km to the West of the Trinidad. Hence, Tropical Storm conditions are no longer expected but there is still the likelihood for impactful weather today. The Tropical Storm Warning was lifted as of 11pm on Tuesday night. The centre of the disturbance, which was a strong Tropical Wave, made its way across Trinidad during the early night hours. However, impactful weather was minimal. The low-latitude and brisk movement speed of the system made it difficult for organization and development into a Tropical Storm to take place. Whilst parts of Tobago and Eastern Trinidad received rainfall from this event, Grenada got the brunt of it, with flooding reported in some areas and wind gusts of up to 118 Km/hr. As of 5am this morning, the system was located at 11.3ºN 65.4ºW, with maximum sustained winds of 35 Knots. Since entering the Caribbean sea, the system looks more defined, but it still remains labelled as “Potential Tropical Cyclone Two.” As for the Adverse Weather Alert, the Met Office says that a moist and unstable atmosphere exists and convergence behind the disturbance (PTC2) is still likely to produce persistent periods of rainfall and patches of heavy showers and/or thunderstorms on Wednesday. These heavy showers/thunderstorms can produce gusty winds in excess of 55 Km/h and rainfall accumulations in excess of 25 mm in some areas. Ponding and localized street flooding are also possible. The risk of landslides/landslips is possible in areas so prone. Sea conditions can become agitated in heavy showers and thunderstorms. Citizens are advised to secure loose outdoor items and livestock. Do not wade or drive through floodwaters. Monitor river levels. Those with marine interest should exercise caution. Follow the instructions of Government Officials. The Met Office notes that there will be no further updates as it pertains to Potential Tropical Cyclone Two. The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Division of Education, Research and Technology announced in a Media Release on Tuesday evening (28th June 2022) that all schools in Tobago will remain closed on Wednesday (29th June 2022), due to the severity of the Tropical Storm Warning (Orange Level) issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS).
Unless further advised by a subsequent release, the Division said all schools will resume classes on Thursday (30th June 2022). Families affected by the adverse weather conditions are advised to contact the 211 Call Centre or TEMA at 660-7489. The Ministry of Health revealed in its daily COVID-19 update this afternoon (Tuesday 28th June 2022) that there are 115 new COVID-19 cases in Trinidad and Tobago plus one (1) additional death. T&T’s total active positive cases is currently at 6,721.
The number of new cases represents a 57.53% increase in reported cases from yesterday. This is the second consecutive day of increasing cases and sixth consecutive day in which cases have been below 200. There have been 5,316 new cases and eighty-eight (88) deaths so far in the month of June. The Ministry reported seventy-three (73) new cases yesterday plus two (2) more unfortunate deaths. The country’s death toll has increased to 4,005. As of 22nd June 2022, 287 deaths were fully vaccinated persons while 3,313 deaths were not fully vaccinated. 390 deaths were recorded prior to 24th May 2021 (date at which the first group of vaccinated persons became fully vaccinated). A total of 713,930 persons have been fully vaccinated, representing 51% of the population. Meanwhile, 686,070 persons are not fully vaccinated (only received a first dose or no doses), representing 49% of the population. 165,134 persons in total have taken a booster shot. Based on data from 22nd July 2021 - 22nd June 2022, 3,712 patients in the parallel healthcare system (Hospitals and step-down facilities) are fully vaccinated, representing 19.3%, while 15,550 are not fully vaccinated, representing 80.7%. The Ministry states that the number of positive cases reported reflects the samples taken during a 2-day period between 26th - 27th June 2022 and not the last twenty-four (24) hours. The Ministry also notes that there are currently 117 COVID-19 positive patients in total being treated at Hospitals and step-down facilities (down 1.68% from yesterday). Four (4) are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and two (2) are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU). In its 5pm update on Tuesday afternoon (28th June 2022), the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) said that a Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Trinidad and Tobago. A Tropical Storm Warning means that Tropical Storm conditions (sustained winds of 63 Km/h or greater) are likely over the warning area within thirty-six (36) hours or less.
At 5pm this afternoon, the centre of Potential Tropical Cyclone Two (PTC2) was located near 10.1°N latitude 59.5°W longitude or about 200 Km East of Trinidad. PTC2 is still a strong Tropical Wave, however, there is potential for intensification into a Tropical Cyclone over the next twenty-four (24) hours. The system is moving toward the West North-West at 39 Km/h. This general movement is expected over the next twenty-four (24) to forty-eight (48) hours. PTC2 will pass over portions of the Southern Windward Islands tonight and Tropical Storm conditions are possible from 6pm this evening. The Met Office notes that ahead of the system, isolated heavy showers/thunderstorms can develop, which can produce gusty winds in excess of 55 Km/h. Regardless of intensification, as the system moves over the islands this evening into tonight, it is likely to produce periods of heavy to intense showers and/or thunderstorms which can result in rainfall accumulations in excess of 50 mm in some areas and wind gusts in excess of 65 Km/h. These wind gusts are capable of breaking tree branches, displacing unsecured roofs and loose outdoor objects, and can even topple over unhealthy trees. Heavy rainfall can produce ponding and localized flash flooding. Marine activities can be adversely affected, as sea conditions will become rough with wave heights reaching occasionally above 3m in open waters and choppy in sheltered areas. The risk of landslides/landslips is likely in areas so prone. The Met Office will issue its next update at 8pm tonight. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, at 5pm AST (2100 UTC), the disturbance was centered near latitude 10.1 North, longitude 59.5 West. The system is moving toward the West near 24 Mph (39 Km/h). A Westward or West-North-Westward motion is expected through Thursday (30th June 2022). On the forecast track, the system will pass near or over portions of the southern Windward Islands tonight, and move over the Southern Caribbean Sea or near the Northern coast of Venezuela and the Northeast coast of Colombia on Wednesday and Thursday. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 Mph (65 Km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next few days if the disturbance remains over water. Conditions appear conducive for development if the disturbance remains over water, and it will likely become a Tropical Storm near the Southern Windward Islands or while moving Westward across the Southern Caribbean Sea.
Tropical-Storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 Km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1,009 mb (29.80 inches). The Government of Venezuela has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the Northern coast of Venezuela from the Peninsula de Paraguana Westward to the Colombia/Venezuela border including the Gulf of Venezuela.
