UPDATE: The CMO clarified that the affected person took the AstraZeneca vaccine and Thrombocytopenia is a known, albeit, rare, side effect of that vaccine.
At today’s Press Conference (Saturday 29th May 2021), hosted by Prime Minister Keith Rowley, Chief Medial Officer Dr. Roshan Parasram confirmed one (1) case of vaccine-induced Thrombocytopenia (low blood platelet count) in a post-vaccinated person.
Dr. Parasram noted the person is doing very well and is under the care of Dr. Kenneth Charles, a Hematologist. This case will be reported to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) is a blood disorder that results in blood clots forming in small blood vessels throughout the body. This results in a low platelet count, low red blood cells due to their breakdown, and often kidney, heart, and brain dysfunction.

The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) announced a short while ago that Prime Minister Keith Rowley will host a Press Conference today (Saturday 29th May 2021) at 2:30pm at the Diplomatic Centre in St. Ann’s.
Since the State of Emergency was announced on 15th May 2021, Trinidad and Tobago has recorded 6,721 new cases and 182 deaths. The State of Emergency was recently extended by ninety (90) days. The Ministry of Health reported 633 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, which is the second-highest number ever recorded, along with eighteen (18) more deaths. The country’s death toll has reached 458. The record for the most daily cases was set on 21st May 2021 with 708 cases and the record for most daily deaths was set on 18th May 2021 with twenty-three (23) deaths. There have been 11,796 new cases and 289 deaths so far in the month of May. The above statistics are no doubt still very alarming to the Prime Minister - even with a State of Emergency in effect along with numerous restrictions still in place, the number of new cases and deaths being reported daily remain high. Prime Minister Rowley last addressed the nation on 22nd May 2021, exactly one (1) week ago, where he announced an extension of the current restrictions by six (6) weeks, until 4th July 2021. There have been some talk of restricting the curfew hours to 6pm to 6am, instead of 9pm to 5am, but that will have other repercussions that the Government may not want to entertain at this time - such as reduced time for grocery shopping, etc. What do you think the Prime Minister will announce today? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates. The Ministry of Health is advising that Trinidad and Tobago continues to experience a high public uptake of COVID-19 vaccines. In a Media Release on Friday night (28th May 2021), the Ministry said, “This fact, in addition to the current vaccine availability, means that some persons may be experiencing challenges in securing an appointment to be vaccinated.”
The Regional Health Authorities have indicated that most appointments are already filled. “This indicates that members of the public have been able to book appointments via the phone and WhatsApp system, but the demand remains extremely high.” The Ministry notes that soon, Trinidad and Tobago will have access to more World Health Organization (WHO) approved vaccines and hence, there will be an increased number of vaccine appointment slots. Additionally, the Ministry is considering the transition to a ‘first-come, first-served’ approach for the administration of COVID-19 vaccines in the future. Members of the public are asked to continue to be patient and to take a WHO-approved COVID-19 vaccine once it is made available to them. Police are investigating the discovery of fourteen (14) bodies, a skull and skeletal remains, stacked in a boat which was found floating four (4) miles off Belle Garden, Tobago, this morning (Friday 28th May 2021). The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said according to reports, around 6:30am this morning, fishermen Doyle Cornwall, of Belle Garden, 56, Jason Broomes, 42, of Richmond Point, and Lance Biggart, 48, of Pembroke, whilst fishing off Belle Garden, spotted a strange vessel. Upon investigating, the fishermen found the decomposed bodies. The fishermen then contacted the Police and the Coast Guard. The fishermen pulled the vessel ashore at the Belle Garden Bay. The bodies, all men, were in an advanced state decomposition. The bodies were eventually removed to the mortuary at the Scarborough General Hospital to await identification and subsequent autopsies to determine the causes of death. Earlier reports indicated that the bodies were Venezuelan nationals, but Police have not yet confirmed this. Visiting the scene were ACP William Nurse, Supt Kirk, ASP Matthews, Inspector Prince and officers of Homicide and Charlotteville and Roxborough Police CID. The entire area was cordoned off as investigations continue. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
