A very unusual Lunar Eclipse took place last night - where the Moon appeared to glow red while seeming brighter and closer to Earth than normal. The rare event is known as a ‘Super Blood Wolf Moon.’ Apart from Trinidad & Tobago, it was also visible from North and South America, as well as areas of western Europe.
This kind of Eclipse occurs when the Earth passes precisely between the Sun and the Moon. The Sun is behind the Earth and the Moon moves into the Earth's shadow. A small amount of sunlight is refracted by the Earth's atmosphere and illuminates the Moon in a reddish color.
The rare celestial event gets the ‘Super’ part of its name from the fact that the Moon is near its closest approach to the Earth - when it is marginally bigger in the sky than usual. The ‘Wolf’ part comes from the name given to Full Moons in January - ‘Wolf Moons.’

UPDATE (24/01/19): The original Egg photo is closing in on 51 Million likes and the Instagram account has nearly 9 Million followers. Another photo has since been posted, showing further cracks to the Egg.
On 4th January 2019, a relatively unknown Instagram account posted a photo that would change the (Internet) World in a matter of days. The photo would hit nearly 50 Million likes in just 14 days and the account now has more than 8.1 Million followers.
The IG account @world_record_egg posted a stock photo of an Egg with the following caption: Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.
See the photo below and continue reading for more on this Egg-travagant story. Yes, we had to.
Needless to say, their goal was more than accomplished in record time - beating Kylie Jenner’s post of her daughter, Stormi, gripping her mother’s thumb - by nearly 32 Million likes. Yikes! Why did this happen? What’s so special about this Egg photo? Nothing. No one knows why this phenomenon took place - and why it’s continuing to gain more likes and attention.
Of course we instantly liked the photo and followed the account - and we’re now writing about it. Welcome to 2019. In a mysterious twist of events, the account posted a second Egg photo on 18th January 2019 - this time the Egg showed a hairline crack. See their latest photo below as well as the now-defeated Kylie Jenner post.
UPDATE 2: The Duke has finally sent a letter to apologize to the driver of the black Kia.
UPDATE: A 9-month-old baby was also in the black Kia, but was luckily uninjured. The driver, a 28-year-old woman, had cuts while a 45-year-old female passenger broke her wrist.
The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, is 'conscious but very shocked and shaken' after crashing his Land Rover in a dramatic car crash near the Sandringham Estate. The Queen is by the Duke's side following the collision which happened just after 3pm local time, when he was pulling out of a Driveway onto the A149 in Babingley, Norfolk which leads to Sandringham.
The Duke’s black Land Rover was apparently 't-boned' by a black Kia and the impact spun his vehicle around into the path of traffic and turned it over in a Lay-by.
View photos from the accident scene below and continue reading for more information.
At least five (5) Police cars and two (2) Ambulances rushed to the scene where two (2) women inside the Kia were treated for minor injuries and cuts. Both were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn and later discharged. The Duke was seen by a doctor at his medical facilities on the Sandringham Estate as a precaution but was given the all-clear.
Both Prince Philip and the female driver were Breathalysed at the scene and both gave negative readings. [Source]
Officials from both the Ministries of Health and Education met today with a Joint Select Committee (JSC) on Social Services and Public Administration to discuss the high level of child obesity in T&T and what can be done about it.
At this meeting it was revealed that local beverage manufacturers could soon face a “Sugar Tax” - the higher the sugar content in their drinks, the higher will be their tax. If these local manufacturers choose to pass this extra cost to consumers (most likely), you will soon be paying more for your sugary drinks. Some other countries such as the United Kingdom already have similar taxes in place. Chief Medical Officer at the Health Ministry, Dr. Roshan Parasram, noted in the meeting that the cost of eating unhealthy foods in T&T was far less and more convenient than consuming healthy foods. According to Dr. Parasram, the proposed Sugar Tax mechanism would look at the amount of sugar being added to drinks and the tax would be applied proportional to that. See some of the statements made by Dr. Parasram below and continue reading for more information. We are looking into the Sugar Tax.
No specific time-frame was given for the implementation of this proposed Sugar Tax.
According to statistics provided by the Global School Health Survey from a few years ago, T&T was leading in overweight children in the 13 - 15 age group with 33.3%, followed by Barbados with 31.9%, Jamaica with 25.6%, and Guyana with 15.4%. [Source]
In an unexpected move, Sandals has officially withdrawn from the Tobago project. The announcement was made at a joint Press Conference today with the Minister of Communications, Stuart Young and CEO of Sandals, Gebhard Rainer.
Minister Young said a handful of people had tainted a global international brand and that it was a sad and disappointing day. See some quotations below from Sandals CEO, Gebhard Rainer and continue reading for more information. From the beginning there has never been a doubt about what the Prime Minister has been trying to do for the good of Trinidad & Tobago.
According to CEO Rainer, the main reason for withdrawing was the negative publicity surrounding the project. He said it was very unfortunate that they had to take this step but they believe it is best to withdraw and focus on other areas that will be more effective.
He also noted that the Sandals Team had been grateful for the unwavering support and transparency from the Government of T&T.
Since launching its streaming service 12 years ago, Netflix has just made its biggest price hikes to date. This is the fourth time Netflix has raised prices - the last time being October 2017.
Previous rate hikes, however, have had little effect on subscriber growth. Netflix saw subscriber growth of 10.7% year-over-year last Quarter, with a total of 58 Million U.S subscribers. Outside of the U.S, Netflix has more than 78 Million subscribers. See Netflix’s new prices below and continue reading for more information.
Starting immediately, new customers will now pay US $8.99 for the Basic Plan (previously $7.99), $12.99 for the HD Plan (previously $10.99) and $15.99 for the 4K Premium Plan (previously $13.99). Existing customers will be grandfathered in and therefore have an extra three (3) months before their prices also increase.
Netflix will definitely need this extra cash as they try to fend off current streaming competitors such as Amazon, Hulu and HBO. But their biggest threats are on the horizon - as giants such as Apple, Disney and NBCUniversal are all launching streaming products either this year or next. Let us know your thoughts in the comments - will you continue your Netflix subscription? [Source]
HBO dropped the Official Teaser for the final season of Game of Thrones yesterday - and fans have questions. And theories. Season 8 will premiere on 14th April 2019.
The 90-second scene features Jon Snow, Sansa Stark, and Arya Stark walking in the crypts of Winterfell, where they come face-to-face with statues of themselves. Fans immediately noticed that one of the Stark children is not there - the youngest living Stark heir, Bran, is nowhere to be seen. Where is Bran?! Watch the Official Tease below from HBO and continue reading for several theories as to why Bran is not seen.
As Jon, Arya, and Sansa are staring at the statues, something makes them turn around. Something really cold. Fans are now speculating that the cold something is, in fact, Bran. Bran as the Night King, that is.
However, there are other fans saying that since Bran is now the Three-Eyed Raven, he is not even really human anymore, hence no real human form to make a statue off. Fear not - all questions will (hopefully) be answered in a few months! [Source]
Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Roshan Parasram, is strongly advising citizens to get the Influenza Vaccination as soon as possible - especially during this current Flu season. He is also urging parents to keep their sick children away from School.
Dr. Parasram made these comments in a recent interview with Newsday, where he also stated that another 20,000 Influenza Vaccines are being ordered by the Health Ministry. In addition to three (3) confirmed deaths from Swine Flu, there has been an unconfirmed report of a fourth death at a Health Center. See Dr. Parasram’s comments below during his interview with Newsday and continue reading for more information. We are now in the process of ordering 20,000 more Vaccines so we’ll have 95,000 for the current Flu season (October 2018 - May 2019).
Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh has confirmed in Parliament that there are currently seventeen (17) ‘laboratory-confirmed’ cases of Swine Flu in T&T as of 11th January 2019. Minister Deyalsingh also admitted that three (3) pregnant women almost died.
