Nine (9) persons, including a 16-year-old boy, have been held for questioning in connection with the recent kidnapping of Narine Maraj, 61, and his wife, Deokie Mattie Maraj, 52.
Latest reports indicate the couple was taken from their home at gunpoint by five (5) men at 5:50pm last Saturday (8th January 2022). A ransom of $2 Million was demanded for their release shortly after. The kidnappers also took the couple’s silver Ford Focus.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), several operations were co-ordinated and conducted between 8th January to 11th January 2022 in the Cumaca Forest and environs, which resulted in both Maraj and his wife being secured on 9th January and 11th January 2022, respectively. The couple’s vehicle was also recovered.
The nine (9) suspects held are between the ages of sixteen (16) to fifty (50) and are from the Northern and Eastern Divisions.
A co-ordinated approach was adopted by investigators under the supervision of Acting Commissioner of Police, Mc Donald Jacob, and the extensive investigations included Officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Eastern Division Task Force, the Northern Division Task Force, the Special Operations Response Team, Operations and Intelligence, Canine Branch, the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, the Special Investigations Unit and the Air Support Unit.
Jacob has commended the dedicated and professional work of the Officers involved in the investigation in ensuring the safe return of the victims. He noted the synergy of efforts among the various law enforcement bodies played a pivotal role in the success of these investigations.
